We help grocers solve food waste profitably

By solving food waste with better forecasting and replenishment, we have a unique opportunity where we can align profit growth and positive social impact for the enormous grocery industry.

Our mission

More food-secure, less wasteful future.

Today, we produce enough food to feed an extra 1 billion people, yet 13.5% of American households are food insecure — 30% of all the food that’s produced is thrown out. Food waste also has huge environmental repercussions: it accounts for 8% of all global GHG emissions, and if it was a country, it would be the third largest GHG emitter behind the US and China.

In grocery stores, billions of dollars worth of food is left unsold and thrown away, accounting for 15% of America’s total food waste. Yet, it’s often thought of as an inevitability — sales for each item fluctuate so drastically that it seems inevitable to over-stock when it’s unnecessary. But what if we could accurately predict the future, so that stores know exactly how many items they need? What if we could create a future where everyone can get the food they need and food isn’t wasted? That’s the future we’re excited to bring to reality.

Our story

It all started with guacamole

Euro’s (our CEO) favorite guacamole was always out of stock at his local supermarket, and one day at a different store, he found a mountain of guacamole that was about to expire. Realizing that grocers were missing potential sales and throwing out tons of food at the same time, he mentioned the problem to his friend, Jack (our CTO), who was doing AI research on optimizing grocery logistics. They discovered how costly bad forecasting was for retailers’ bottom lines, but also to food security, the environment, and animal welfare — causes that they both deeply care about.

So, they decided to leverage Jack’s AI research to solve this problem and help grocers solve food waste profitably. Today, Guac is working with some of the largest regional and national grocery retailers to reimagine their fresh operations and cut food waste — and making sure the perfect amount of guacamole is stocked.

Our values

One solution doesn’t fit all

We flip the traditional approach of building one solution to sell to different customers on its head: we work closely with each customer to design and build the solution that reflects the realities of their stores, not of an average store.

Listen first

We focus on solving problems our customers have, not giving them a solution for a problem we think they have. That’s why we listen first to what our customers want, and build a solution to solve their specific needs.

Details matter

We care deeply about delivering a solution that delights, not just one that is fine — and we know the difference lies in the details. We go the extra mile to get the details right.

Backed by the best

We're experts in machine learning and grocery logistics and we have the backing of world class investors.
